What is a SSC and a Mei-Tai?

SSC is short for Soft Structure Carrier. It means that the carrier has structure to it, like the buckles, body and hood parts, but that it is soft and without a metal frame. We were not the inventors of the SSC, also known as a full buckle carrier, but we did make our own improvements and changes to the idea to improve upon an existing concept.

Traditionally a Mei-Tai (pronounced May-Tie) was a Chinese style of baby carrier. It was a square of cloth with four long straps attached parallel to the body. The straps were twisted around the wearer and tucked or rolled to secure the baby in the square of cloth. More recent designs still stem from the traditional carrier, but feature buckles or padded straps to increase the comfort for the wearer. The long straps are tied into a knot to keep them secure, or the straps can all be replaced with buckles for added ease of use.

How do I use my SSC or my Mei-Tai?

Here are some picture instructions to help you learn to use your Mei-Tai. While I am no longer making the traditional MT, I do think that the pictures are great instructions to learn to use one, no matter what the brand might be. I will work on getting picture instructions up for the full buckle as soon as our weather here will cooperate. Feel free to email me if you have problems or questions or look into a local group for some one on one help.

*Picture instructions for the Full Buckle coming soon, please just email me in the meantime if you need help with your carrier. *

What is Babywearing?

Babywearing just means that you are carrying your baby or child in some type of carrier. You are able to keep your baby close to you and still have your hands free most of the time. Babies have been worn in carriers for many many years and in countries all over the world. It is not a new phenomenon and is becoming more prevalent in the United States with more carriers becoming available to the public in main stream stores. Carrying your child close to you in a carrier allows you to go about your daily activities while giving the baby a sense of closeness and security as well as a chance to explore their environment. Babies that are worn cry less and sleep better as they are in constant contact with their caregiver and so their needs are met sooner. They learn language quicker due to the constant interaction and develop a sense of independence sooner contrary to what some may believe. It has also been suggested that wearing your baby can encourage and lengthen breastfeeding since the baby is constantly near the breast and the mother is able to breastfeed the baby while going about her daily activities. Babywearing is very useful tool with a sick or teething child as they are comforted by your presence. Babywearing is also wonderful for traveling through busy airports, zoo's or shopping malls, anywhere with crowds where your child could feel overwhelmed, get tired or you might worry about their safety. There are many many benefits to babywearing, you can learn more about it by visiting some of our linked sites.
